Stevenson High club hosts 9/11 remembrance

Around 250 students, teachers, firefighters, police officers and members of the community attended Friday's Sept. 11 ceremony at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire.

The Students Helping Soldiers club sponsored the event at the Garden of Peace, Hope and Remembrance on the south side of the campus.

The ceremony is held each year to honor first-responders, military members, veterans and those who died in the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001.

Students Helping Soldiers club President Ben Panitch said Stevenson High School truly stands behind the "never forget" slogan.

"So our ceremony we put on today, we do it so that we can remember and instill in each generation coming through the sacrifices our police, fire and military make on a daily basis, whether deployed oversees or deployed on just our regular streets," Panitch said. "They make a sacrifice everyday and we try and make sure that message gets passed along to them. And our club, Students Helping Soldiers, continues to drive that message - support the troops oversees, support the troops here in our homeland and supporting overall everyone that serves our great nation on a daily basis."

The Students Helping Soldiers club has 300 student members and started after the 2001 terror attacks. They have been holding annual ceremonies since 2002.
