Des Plaines Starbucks gets village OK to start selling alcohol

Des Plaines' city council Tuesday formally approved the creation of a new liquor license on a 5-3 vote that would allow the Starbucks at 1427 Lee St. to sell wine and craft beer.

The coffee chain is expanding its Starbucks Evenings program, which is already at 13 locations in the Chicago area, including The Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg, Burr Ridge, Yorkville, Winnetka and Evanston.

Officials say the concept is meant to bring existing daytime customers back to the store later in the day, and give customers another option of something to purchase. Critics on the city council expressed concern that other coffee shops would be asking for liquor licenses, and that there's already enough liquor being sold in town.

After Starbucks applies for a city license, the shop will be able to sell alcohol from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
