Tri-Cities Attack team takes Midwest United Cup championship
The Tri-Cities Attack U-14 soccer team took the championship in the Midwest United Cup in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Aug. 22-23 with a record of 4-1.
The team lost its first game of the tournament, and the first of the season, though they were able to make the necessary adjustments to not lose another game in the whole tournament. The boys were relentless in their games battling some of the top teams in the area.
In the semifinal game, they met up with the team that knocked them out of the tournament in last year's semifinal, but this year they found a better result with a 1-0 victory.
The championship game had a dramatic finish. Playing the fifth game in two days, the boys were starting to feel the exhaustion, but they gave it everything they had. They went down 0-1 in the first half yet never felt that they were out of the game. With 15 minutes left in the game, Zach Bader dribbled down the right side line and made a cross over the goal mouth where Isaac Hager made a leaping volley to put the ball in the net. That goal ignited the team and five minutes after the first goal, in a similar fashion, Gabe D'Amico crossed the ball from the same corner and Niko Scheibal finished with a dramatic header to win the game.
The team, which has members from group from St. Charles, Batavia and Geneva, beat Lakeshore Premier SC in the final 2-1.
