Church celebrates anniversary with big band sounds
The era of big band music will return to the Barrington United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, when the Big Band Sound of Deerfield performs a live concert as part of the church's 175th anniversary celebration.
The 18-piece band with a vocalist is known for its renditions of songs made famous by Glen Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and others. Admission to the concert is free, but donations for Family Service of Barrington Area will be appreciated.
Family Service of Barrington Area is a not-for-profit organization that offers mental health education and counseling to all individuals and families, regardless of their age, religion, economic circumstances and ethnic background.
Family Service was started in the Barrington area in the 1960s through the efforts of members of the Barrington United Methodist Church. The church, founded in 1840 when members began meeting in Barrington area homes, is at 98 Algonquin Road, Barrington Hills.
