Barrington wins battle of unbeatens against Buffalo Grove
Just as the last group of golfers from Barrington and Buffalo Grove reached the final green, they had to endure some heavy rains.
About the same time, the Fillies were clutching the reins of first place in the Mid-Suburban League.
In a battle between league unbeatens on Tuesday, Barrington's girls edged the host Bison 163-168 at the Buffalo Grove Golf Course.
Playing the par-37 front nine, BG senior and medalist Emily Carnes tied her career best with a 38.
The next best score belonged to Barrington freshman Ishani Majmudar, who shot a 40 followed by her three teammates with 41s (junior Reena Sulkar, junior Shivani Majmudar and freshman Nicole Ciskowski).
Those scores helped the Fillies gain the win and a 7-0 record in the MSL. Buffalo Grove is 7-1.
"I am so proud of my sister (Ishani Majmudar)," said Shivani, who grew up playing with Ishani at the Medinah Country Club. "We've always been out playing golf together but now to have my sibling play on my same team, it's great."
Although they've never been paired in the same group in high school, they do cross paths once in a while on the course.
"We usually don't ask how the other is doing," Shivani said. "We'll just say 'Keep it going,' or make a joke, or keep encouraging each other.
"I'm so proud of her to be on the varsity as a freshman. This was an important match and she really played her game. She didn't let anything bother her."
Ishani's highlight came on the par 5, No. 6 hole.
With her feet in the bunker and the ball above on the grass, she lofted her hit wedge some 40 yards to within 3 feet and sank the putt for a birdie.
"I'm so proud of Ishani," Shavani said. "It was tough conditions and she pulled it out.
"The most important thing is that we all knew what we had to do," Ishani said. "It's all about being a team and being supportive of each other. We knew we all had to do our best, and we did."
Junior Allie Quinn turned in the fifth-best round for the Fillies with a solid 43.
"It's a long course, we played a tough team and (adverse) weather was coming," said Barrington coach Jodi Schoeck, whose Fillies were the last team to win an MSL crown (2007) prior to Prospect's current streak of seven in a row.
"Our girls kept pushing. It's nice to have 10 girls on our varsity and that on any given day, anyone can step up. That's what it's all about in team golf."
Carnes has been all about the team for the Bison.
She even skipped travel softball for the first time to concentrate solely on golf.
"Emily has been tremendous for us this season," said BG coach Matt Myers of the all-area catcher. "She is a great leader. She has really committed herself to golf this past year, and it's paying dividends."
Carnes closed her round with a birdie on No. 9.
She placed a 6-iron 15 feet from the hole and calmly putted it home to finish 1-over.
"We knew Barrington was a really good team and I just wanted to be focused," said Carnes, who plans to study pre-med and Spanish in college.
"I think I can get a lot farther with golf, so that's why I stopped softball and will pursue golf for college. And you can play golf longer in life."
Completing the Bison scorecard were sophomores Haeri Lee (41), Jasmine Yi (42) and Katie Fontanetta (47).
"I'm proud of all our kids," Myers said. "We say it all the time, but I don't think they've reached their full potential. We're waiting for the day when we put up four great scores, and it will happen."
