Waukegan church to celebrate 111 years
Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church, 210 South Ave., Waukegan, will celebrate its 111th anniversary Sunday, Sept. 13, during the 11 a.m. worship service. The anniversary theme is "The Doors of the Church Are Still Open." Bishop Lawrence Kirby of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of Racine, Wisconsin, will be the guest preacher. Church members who have served in a position for more than 40 years will be recognized during this service. Trinity AME is one of the oldest African-American churches in Lake County and is referred to by many as "the Mother of all Negro churches" in the county. Trinity AME, a leader of the Civil Rights movement in this area, is pastored by the Rev. Janice Brazil Cummings, the first female leader in the history of the church.
