Wildcat Marching Band raises money for music students

During their recent Band Camp, the Libertyville High School Marching Band held a Progressive Coin Drive and collected pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and bills.

By the end of the week they had raised more than $1,500. In the past, this money was donated to a large national charity, but this year's Marching Band Social Chairs Caroline Short and Laura Pressley decided they wanted to help a local organization. They reached out to Lake County Cares, which helped them find the perfect fit: Bravo Waukegan.

Bravo Waukegan is a 5-year-old nonprofit agency dedicated to helping students in the Waukegan Public School system participate in music programs. Among other activities, they collect used instruments, clean them and distribute them to students in need, and provide lessons to musicians in need.

Karey Walker, executive director of Bravo Waukegan, was thrilled to accept the check from the LHS band director Adam Gohr and his social chairs. The money will be used to support an after-school program called Mariachi Club, which teaches children this form of music.
