A-cappella Quartet Wins Senior Idol Contest

A female vocal quartet, Impromptu, took top honors in a for-seniors-only competition this week. Amateur performers from the Chicagoland area competed in the Senior Idol Talent Competition held in conjunction with the 20th annual Senior Lifestyle Expo at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace this week.

All contestants in the contest were required to be over the age of 60. Auditions were held on the first day of the Expo, and the top 10 contestants performed on the contest as the culmination of the Expo's second day.

Awards were given to the top 4 acts. Impromptu, consisting of lead, Claudia Prokupek, from Western Springs, tenor, Karen Benjamin, from Wheaton, baritone, Denise Struve, from Hodgkins, and bass, Allynn Kairis, from South Elgin won the top spot, Senior Idol (Best All Around), with their 4 part a-cappella harmony. All four ladies also sing with the Village Vocal Chords, a women's championship barbershop chorus that meets in Glen Ellyn.
