Barrington@150: Safety Town

For decades, Barrington children have learned the preschool rules of the road - and so much more - at Safety Town, the two-week educational program run by the Barrington Junior Women's Club.

Since the 1970s, the club has hosted children for age-appropriate lessons in pedestrian and bicycle safety, calling 911, Stranger Danger, being safe around animals, staying away from poisons and much, much more.

Parents traditionally would circle enrollment day on their calendars to claim a spot for their child in the program, and older children rushed to sign up as counselors.

The program moved around a bit in its early years but in 1997 found a stable home at JFK Health World (now Orchard Church of Barrington), 1301 S. Grove St.
