Tail Waggin' Tuesday salutes service dogs Aug. 11
Service dogs can be a guardian angel to those in need or a criminal's worst nightmare and they'll be the focus of East Dundee's next "Tail Waggin' Tuesday" at 5 p.m. Aug. 11, at the Depot on River Street.
Although all types and breeds of dogs and their owners are invited to TWT, any and all service dogs (active or retired) are asked to attend and participate in the evening's special honor parade.
On hand for the free event will be the duo of Elgin Police Officer Chad Schuttrow and Colt from the K-9 Unit, demonstrating their effective police work.
They will be joined by a canine team from Save-A Vet showing the many ways a service dog helps its handler navigate the challenges of the world around them.
The evening includes entertainment; pet services/products vendors; raffles and hot dogs from a caboose at Dundee Depot Dogs.
"We're honored to showcase these hardworking service dogs and their handlers. They do so much for the community and they need to be thanked for their service," said Village President Lael Miller.
Each month's Tail Waggin' Tuesday has had a different theme. The last one, set for Sept. 15, will highlight Dundee's German, Irish and Scottish heritage.
This popular family-friendly event was first introduced last year and attracted hundreds of dogs throughout the summer.
The Depot, located at 319 N. River St., along the Fox River Trail where numerous dog owners exercise their favorite canine. East Dundee has created special water fountains for dogs and boasts "Park Your Pet" signs throughout the downtown district for convenient restaurant pickup service.
"We've made it easier for pet owners to come out and visit East Dundee's downtown district. They can meet their neighbors and have some fun with their favorite pooch," Miller said.
As usual, all dogs will have an opportunity to participate in a photo contest. Their photos will be posted on Facebook where visitors can vote for their favorite entry and where the winner of last month's Favorite Facebook Pooch will be announced
