Stick to relevant facts on official's pay
I'm writing in response to Bob Porada's letter regarding the raise approved for the Des Plaines city manager.
I agree that the raise seems excessive and will add to pension liabilities. However, I disagree with the basis of Mr. Porada's argument that the city manager already makes substantially more money than most Des Plaines residents.
This point is not relevant as these residents don't have the responsibility for an $156 million budget and the entire city staff.
What is relevant is whether the city manager's wages are competitive with his peers.
According to his LinkedIn page, Mr. Bartholomew earned a bachelor's degree in community development and a master's degree in public administration. He also served as assistant city manager of Sterling Heights, Michigan, a large, vibrant suburb northwest of Detroit. His qualifications justify a salary equal to that of his fellow city managers in suburbs with similar demographics.
I don't live in Des Plaines, and I have no other connection to Des Plaines. I am growing weary of arguments against successful individuals who have a tremendous amount of responsibility receiving attractive compensation. The Democratic Party has disparaged these people, when they should be using them as examples of what the American dream should be.
Those that don't like their position in life should follow the examples of hardworking successful people instead of blaming them for their plight.
