ECC begins new initiative to increase student success

Elgin Community College has announced a new initiative aimed at increasing success for African-American students.

The African-American New Student Welcome Reception, a free event open to current and new African-American students, will take place Thursday, Aug. 20, in the Building B Alumni Room, Room B182, at the college's Spartan Drive campus, 1700 Spartan Drive.

Students can choose to attend during one of these two time periods: noon to 2 p.m. or 4 to 6 p.m.

"This reception is just one strategy being implemented to help improve the success rate of this student population by connecting them with peers, faculty, staff, and administrators," said Gregory D. Robinson, dean of student services and development. "Students who develop a sense of belonging and community are more likely to persist and eventually complete their intended educational goal."

The event provides an opportunity for African-American students to:

• Build a network of faculty, staff and student leaders.

• Learn about clubs and organizations on campus, including the Black Student Association.

• Meet their potential mentor.

• Get familiarized with various resources and student support services on campus.

• Meet peers and have fun.

The welcome reception is targeted at African-American students but is open to all ECC students. Refreshments and raffle prizes will be provided.
