Land sold for new Des Plaines park

Plans for a new "pocket park" on a residential block in Des Plaines are taking shape now that the city has officially sold the vacant space to the park district.

The city council this week approved a $52,000 sale of the 7,000-square-foot vacant lot at 968 Second Ave. to the park district, which is planning to install a playground, swings and a concrete walk. The city acquired the land in condemnation, and park district officials were interested in the property so they could expand recreational opportunities in the neighborhood.

The city and park district are splitting $8,000 worth of back taxes from before the condemnation occurred, and $2,000 in closing costs.
