Discuss favorite poems at Saturday workshop

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 8, led by Larry Janowski. Saturday's topic will be "Favorite Poems."

Janowski will bring several of his own favorites and point out techniques and choices the poet used to help us discover what we might use in our own work.

Each participant should bring one favorite poem and be ready to give one or two reasons why they value that poem. If you need some background on your chosen poem, see if the poem is available at a trustworthy poetry website like poetryfoundation.org or poets.org.

Larry Janowski, a Chicago South-Sider who lives on the North Side, is a Franciscan friar and priest who teaches at a Jesuit University.

His master of fine arts degree is in fiction, but he's been writing poetry almost exclusively since the '90s. Janowski has won city and state awards, grants and prizes, and is at work on a second book with the working title "There Will be a Second Collection."

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. R.S.V.P. to (847) 382-6922 or email nwcc@att.net.
