Barrington@150: Prices we can only dream about today

According to historian Arnett C. Lines, William T. Stott's general store had a general line of dry goods, satchels, school books and "the celebrated Elgin flour" among stacks of other goods. He promised "entire satisfaction or money refunded," but look at what things cost - in 1893 $1 would buy you 10 pounds of sugar, 7 pounds of roasted coffee beans, 13 pounds of dried peaches, 21 bars of soap or 2 pounds of the "best uncolored" Japan tea. Need a pair of "custom made" shoes? $2!
