Mary Sue Welch, board president of Waukegan to College, announced the winners of the 2015 Sunrise Rotary Scholarships.

As Welch explained, W2C is honored to receive funds from the Libertyville Sunrise Rotary Club to be given to two deserving W2C students. The $1,000 and $500 scholarships are awarded to students who show academic excellence, demonstrated financial need and a commitment to the Rotary Club's motto, "Service above Self."

Hansel Lopez, a rising freshman at College of Lake County will receive the $1,000 scholarship. In his essay, Hansel wrote that he plans to use his education to fight world hunger. He will enroll in the Engineering Pathways with direct admission to the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois.

According to Hansel, he will be able to help others "because of the wonderful college education made possible by caring mentors and Waukegan to College."

Vanessa Flores was awarded the $500 scholarship. She will attend Dominican University in the fall.

She wrote, "I will strive to make where I come from a better place and to be someone who helps shape the lives of others."

In addition to Lopez and Flores, eight W2C seniors graduated and will attend Georgetown University, Pomona College, DePauw University, Denison University, University of Illinois Springfield and College of Lake County.

Launched in 2009, W2C seeks to advance local students' intellectual and emotional development, cultivating a strong commitment to community and a profound belief that they can build a brighter future for themselves, their families and their communities.

By establishing high academic expectations and counseling students and their families on the college admissions process, W2C helps students realize their full potential by making the dream of college a reality.
