Arrieta does it all for Chicago Cubs over Chicago White Sox
Right-hander Jake Arrieta turned in another strong pitching performance Sunday, and he also hit his first major-league home run as the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 before 41,688 fans at Wrigley Field. The Cubs salvaged the final game of the series after the White Sox had won the first two.
Arrieta improved to 10-5 with his second complete game of the season, a 2-hitter. He became the first Cubs starting pitcher to reach 10 victories before the all-star break since Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano did so in 2008.
The Cubs jumped on White Sox starting pitcher Jose Quintana with 2 runs in the first inning. Dexter Fowler led off with a single to center field. After Anthony Rizzo flied out, Kris Bryant tripled down the left-field line to score Fowler. Jorge Soler brought Bryant home with a single to left.
Arrieta hit his home run leading off the fifth inning. It was a line drive to left field.
On the mound, Arrieta did not allow a baserunner until Tyler Saladino singled with one out in the fourth inning.
The crowd was the largest at Wrigley Field this season.
Quintana worked 7⅓ innings, giving up 8 hits and all 3 Cubs runs.
