Wambach a great American soccer story

As we marked the birth of our nation last weekend, we celebrated two victories for all Americans: The U.S. Supreme Court's decision on marriage equality and another World Cup Final for the USA Women's Soccer Team.

The ruling upholds the first line of our Declaration of Independence, "We the People." We are a nation of so many great people of all backgrounds - who lead, listen, and live to serve others both in silence and before the eyes of the world.

Today, one such American stands out. Last weekend, Abby Wambach played her last career match for our nation in the Women's World Cup Final. With over 200 caps (wins) for our nation, USA Captain Wambach is truly a hero among us. Marrying her teammate, Sarah Huffman, in 2013, Wambach is a brave and incredible person.

Wambach is recognized the world over for both her daring headers and her humanitarianism. Children and young adults around the globe look up to her not just as a soccer player but also as a caring person.

Following their 2011 World Cup loss to Japan, Wambach rallied her teammates to take time from their training to visit Japan. There, the players offered a free soccer clinic to children, especially those still grieving from the loss of their parents in the 2011 tsunami.

Though earning a fraction of what most professional athletes command in this nation, Wambach stands for the pure passion of sports and for love of the game.

She brings a no-nonsense and often outspoken toughness onto the field. But more importantly, she brings to mind what ultimately matters in life - having a compassion and caring for others that supersede national borders, race, gender, religion and self-interests.

Happy birthday to the United States of America. Go USA!
