'The Wizard of Oz' coming to the Schaumburg Park District

"The Wizard of Oz" will be performed July 17-19, at the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road, in Schaumburg. Based on the original movie, the show will take its audience on a captivating adventure where a tornado whisks Dorothy and her dog Toto to the magical land of Oz.

"This is the second time we've done 'The Wizard of Oz,'" said Beth Waller, cultural arts supervisor. "We have all ages in the show and a 10-person ensemble singing throughout the performance, so that's kind of an extra twist."

An interactive tornado and use of multimedia are among the special effects planned for the show. The cast also will transition from black and white to color when Dorothy arrives in Oz's Munchkinland.

"I think it will be fun for everyone," Waller said. "We do a meet and greet with all the characters afterward and have an area to take photos. It's a high-energy show with all the add-ons."

Upcoming show times include: 7 p.m. Friday, July 17; 6 p.m. Saturday, July 18; and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 19.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for youth ages 12 and younger and free to children ages 2 and younger if being held.
