Police: Trio drained 60,000 gallons of water from Carol Stream fountain

Three people drained roughly 60,000 gallons of water from the fountain at Carol Stream's Town Center over the July 4 weekend, police said Tuesday.

Police said they are investigating what they called a criminal trespassing complaint. They believe the suspects are juveniles.

The trio entered the fountain area around 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, at the Ross Ferraro Town Center on the corner of Gary Avenue and Lies Road, police said.

They waded in and turned a valve that emptied the fountain's water into a drain, Village Manager Joseph Breinig said. When the water reached a certain level, the fountain's pump shut off, a safety feature that prevents it from overheating.

On the Fourth of July, the village discovered the dry fountain. Crews opened a valve to fill the fountain back up, a lengthy process that lasted until the early evening, Breinig said.

No damage was reported to the fountain, a centerpiece of the Town Center.
