Westgate Field Day
The students at Westgate Elementary School recently celebrated its annual field day. The event was moved back in the schedule a few weeks due to the use of snow days this year and after last year's experience of being rained/snowed out a couple times.
There were a total of fifteen stations at this year's event. These stations included 50-yard dash, limbo, basketball shooting, volleyball, an obstacle course, water cup relay, and a popsicle rest station. A favorite amongst Westgate's students is the "garbage pile" activity where students have to move hundreds of items from one place to another as quickly as possible. The rule is that you can only carry one item at a time, and teachers are allowed to help. To achieve a good class time, teamwork is essential!
"I really enjoyed each year's field day at Westgate! I'm going to miss it at middle school," said graduating 5th grader, Ethan Kossack. JJ Bartosch said his favorite is the tug-of-war event because it's competitive and fun at the same time. "I really like pulling hard, and we only do it during field day...I love tug-of-war!"
In the future, students will help design, plan, and run field day. This idea ties into the "Leader in Me" initiative that's being implemented at Westgate School. "It's really cool to give kids leadership roles and then let them take ownership of it," said Coach Eric Kirschner, Westgate's PE teacher.
