Al Viehman wins Buffalo Grove community service award
The Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove has named Al Viehman the recipient of its 2015 Bill Reid - Buffalo Grove Community Service Award.
For more than 19 years, Viehman has donated countless volunteer hours to make Buffalo Grove a better place to live and raise a family, making him one of the community's true unsung heroes.
A 27-year resident of the village, Viehman served on the village's Appearance Commission from July 1990 to August 1997, the Plan Commission from August 1997 to April 1999, and the Buffalo Grove Fire and Police Commission from March 2005 until November 2014.
Viehman, an active Rotarian for the last 17 years, will be recognized at the Rotary Green concert on Saturday, and will have his named permanently inscribed on the Bill Reid - Buffalo Grove Community Service Award plaque at village hall.
He also will be honored at the Aug. 3 Buffalo Grove village board meeting.
A $500 contribution to the American Diabetes Association will be made in his name, with another contribution being made to the Rotary Foundation.
Bill Reid, for whom the award is named, was a charter member of the Buffalo Grove Rotary Club and an active community volunteer from the earliest days of the village. He was an educator by trade who had a productive career in several positions in Northwest Suburban High School District 214.
Past Bill Reid Award winners have included Maureen Welborn, Bill Balling, John Green, Marc Spivak, Linda Rosen, Mike Rylko, Dick Stone, Paulette Greenberg, Stu Cohen and Lou Malnati's, DeAnne Glover, Ellyn Ross, and Ernie and Joan Karge.
