3 years in prison for first of 2 in large Gilberts drug bust

A 51-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to cocaine possession in a May 2014 bust in Gilberts.

Juan Hinojosa, of the 600 block of Lavoie Avenue, Elgin, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge late last week after spending 13 months in jail, according to Kane County court records.

Hinojosa was the second person arrested in a larger bust of 15 pounds of cocaine and 24 pounds of marijuana after authorities raided a home on the 100 block of John B. Boor Drive May 28, 2014.

Judge Susan Clancy Boles accepted the plea in which prosecutors reduced the charge from possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a felony that carries a six- to 30-year prison term with no possibility of probation.

Hinojosa, who also went by the aliases of George Hernandez Jr. and Jose Hernandez, was caught with 60 grams of cocaine, according to court records.

A message left with Hinojosa's defense attorney, Tim Mahoney, was not returned.

Under state law, Hinojosa can have his sentence halved for good behavior while in prison. He also gets credit for 13 months in jail while his case was pending.

Martin Reyes-Hernandez, 41, of Gilberts is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and faces between 12 and 60 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge.

He is next due in court July 23 and was being held on $900,000 bail. He must post $90,000 and prove it came from legitimate sources in order to be released while the case is pending.
