Dirt Detectives surface in St. Charles

A half dozen kids explored rocks and fossils Thursday during a St. Charles Park District nature camp called Dirt Detectives.

Camp instructor Jean Kaknes gave each child a small magnifying glass to use as they passed around dozens of rock fossils on a picnic table under an oak tree outside the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in the James O. Breen Park at Campton Hills and Peck roads.

The park district offers several day camps for elementary school kids, and others for toddlers and teens, in a format designed to create respect for the natural world. Camps the week of July 6 will be peanut free to accommodate those with allergy restrictions.
