Apply now to be Batavia 4th Ward alderman

Those interested in being a Batavia 4th Ward alderman have until 5 p.m. July 6 to apply for the vacancy.

Mayor Jeff Schielke is accepting letters of interest at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., according to a news release from the city. They can also be emailed to mayor@cityofbatavia.net.

The city council will interview applicants July 14 and select one that night. The person will be sworn in July 20.

Applicants must be 18 or older, live in the ward and be eligible to vote. Schielke has said, while filling a vacancy last year, that people from out of the ward applied. What ward you live in is listed on your voter registration card, and a map of the ward is available online under "city council and elected officials."

You must have lived in the ward for at least one year prior to the appointment. Active duty military personnel are excused from this requirement as long as they lived in the community prior to enlisting.

You cannot have been convicted of any felonies, "bribery, infamous crime or perjury."

Applicants can't owe any money to the city, including unpaid taxes or fines for traffic tickets or ordinance violations.

The appointee will serve through the end of April 2017.

Jamie Saam resigned June 10 to become director of Batavia MainStreet. She was elected alderman in 2013, defeating longtime incumbent Jim Volk.
