45-year Elk Grove commission member retires

A longtime member of the Elk Grove Village board of fire and police commissioners is retiring after 45 years on the panel responsible for hiring and promoting public safety officers in the village.

Dr. Alan Shapiro, an Elk Grove dentist, has served on the three-member commission since its inception, and for many years has been its chairman. He told Mayor Craig Johnson that he would be stepping down, and this week, the mayor appointed former Deputy Police Chief Dion Zinnel in Shapiro's place.

Current Commissioner Butch Ehrke was promoted to chairman.
