Convert old technology to digital in Glen Ellyn Library's new Media Lab

Patrons of the Glen Ellyn Public Library can convert their collection of home videos to DVD for free and preserve precious memories, thanks to the library's new Media Lab.

"As part of last year's remodel of the second floor, the library created a small digital media lab designed to offer do-it-yourself resources for exploring 21st century technology," said Susan DeRonne, Adult Department director.

"We wanted to give our Glen Ellyn residents access to the digital equipment necessary to convert old technology into new."

Full use of the Media Lab is not yet available to the public, but the library has opened the Media Lab for limited use for digital conversions. To celebrate this soft opening, members of the library can have staff complete one VHS-to-DVD conversion for free. Members can then have staff walk them through the process of using the library's new Media Lab and in-house equipment and convert the rest of their memories themselves. DVD discs will be provided for free.

"Not only can people convert their home videos to digital format, they can also convert vinyl records to digital music to listen on-the-go, and turn those old vacation slides into digital images," said Mary Kay Akers, instruction and business outreach librarian.

"The equipment and services provide a real and meaningful value to our members," Akers added. "Libraries have always been in the business of archiving and storytelling, and now the library is helping community members archive their precious memories and share their stories with their children and grandchildren."
