Kids catch big ones at Waukegan Fishing Derby

Bevier Pond was stocked with 850 pounds of catfish for the 25th Annual Waukegan Park District Fishing Derby held Saturday, June 6, at Bevier Park from 8-10:30 a.m. This family event brought more than 370 participants who spent the morning trying to catch the "big one."

Age group winners for the biggest fish caught were:

4 years and younger:

• First: Sophia Pena, 22.5 inches.

• Second: Jayden Flowers, 19.25 inches.

• Third: Xander Cardaropoli, 18 inches.

5-8 years: (Three-way tie all at 24 inches, in order of time caught)

• First: Oswaldo Olivares, 24 inches.

• Second: Carlos Lara, 24 inches.

• Third: Camila Pena, 24 inches.

9-12 years:

• First: Brardal Johnson, 24 inches.

• Second: Marcus Ortiz, 23 inches.

• Third: Xander Ehright, 23 inches.

13-16 years:

• First: Ojay Serano, 25.25 inches.

• Second: George Herrera, 25 inches.

• Third: Koby Martin, 23 inches.

17 years and older:

• First: Roslyn Borne, 27.25 inches.

• Second: John Plewka, 27 inches.

• Third: Darnell Hentz, 26 inches.
