KeyLime Cove part of effort to set swimming lesson record

KeyLime Cove in Gurnee will be one of the facilities around the world hosting the effort to set a new Guinness World Record for The World's Largest Swimming Lesson.

The event takes place Thursday, June 18, at 10 a.m. This is the sixth year in a row for the event, which attracts tens of thousands of kids and adults at aquatic facilities.

To participate in The World's Largest Swimming Lesson, children can register at KeyLime Cove between 8 and 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 18. Registration will take place at the front of the water park. The swimming lesson will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and participants will be allowed to utilize the water park until 1 p.m. at no cost.

This is a first-come, first-served event with limited availability based on the maximum occupancy of the waterpark. For information, visit keylimecove.com/things-to-do/event-calendar.

"We welcome families to join us in achieving the Guinness World Record for The World's Largest Swim Lesson 2015," said Dale McFarland, CEO of Veracity Hospitality, the management company for KeyLime Cove. "This year our goal is to have 500 attendees participate in this educational event at KeyLime Cove."

The current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson stands at 36,564 participants representing 22 countries. Organizers said an important message from the event is the importance of swimming lessons that will be spread to hundreds of thousands of families.

Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1 to 5, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children aged 1 to 4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training.
