Jewelry, pottery and more at Arlington Heights art festival

It didn't take long for Teri Frankiewicz to snag some pottery soap dishes and a hat to protect herself from the sun Saturday, shortly after she started perusing the Promenade of Art in downtown Arlington Heights.

The Arlington Heights resident said she attends the event, which showcases works by more than 125 juried artists from across the country, every year - and often compares notes with friends and neighbors.

"My girlfriend actually told me about her," she said while looking at pottery by artist Mary Jo Schmith of Front Avenue Pottery & Tile, based in St. Paul, Minnesota.

"I also texted my husband because earlier I saw some great birdhouses made of recycled barn wood," she added, explaining her husband Chuck is a carpenter.

Tony Stathis of Crystal Lake said he and his girlfriend took the train from Crystal Lake to bring their combined three children to the event, which features paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture and more.

"The girls are really enjoying it, but we're struggling a little to keep the boy entertained," he said.

The Promenade seems to grow each year, said Arlington Heights resident Kristine Wienberg, who came with her dog, Jade. "I always look for jewelry," she said. "I usually pick a piece every year, usually a bracelet."

The Promenade of Art returns continues 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday along Vail and Campbell streets in downtown Arlington Heights.
