Vietnam memorial in Hoffman Estates ‘still brings tears to your eyes'

The Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is now on display in Hoffman Estates, and those who have visited it so far say it's been an emotional experience. For example, take Gerry Greifenstein of Arlington Heights, who arrived yesterday to visit the name of J. McKeon, with whom she grew up in her native Chicago neighborhood of Bridgeport. “We were very close to the family,” she said. “It was a small, close community. West Chicago man charged with child abduction, sexual abuse

A West Chicago man whom authorities describe as “obsessed” with kids is accused of attempting to abduct young children on multiple occasions. In one instance, authorities said Giuseppe Ressa approached a group of children at a Lisle playground and suggested they play hide-and-seek. At one point, Ressa made physical contact with a 7-year-old girl as she played on a slide, prosecutors say. Full story.

‘Father' of paramedic service in suburbs and country dies

Dr. Stanley M. Zydlo, an Inverness doctor who introduced the idea of training firefighters to be paramedics, is being remembered as someone who changed the world of EMS in the face of skepticism in the early 1970s. Zydlo died at the age of 81. “He was a pioneer,” Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson said. “People told him, ‘You can't expect a firefighter to do that, you can't depend on it.' Police say woman caught ‘green handed' stealing flower pots

A Norridge woman was caught “green handed,” Mount Prospect police said yesterday, when they found as many as 10 flower pots and urns in the back of her car that she admitted to stealing from homes. The discovery was made when a police sergeant pulled over a vehicle traveling east on Golf Road without its headlights. Full story.

Oak Brook police look for ruse burglary suspects

Oak Brook police are on the lookout for three people believed to have been involved in a ruse residential burglary last weekend. Police said that two residents of a home on the 100 block of Concord Drive were approached by a man at 3 p.m. last Saturday who purported to be working for their neighbors. Full story.

Police: 6 found with 700 fake credit, gift cards in Aurora

Six Florida residents were arrested in Aurora this week and charged with having more than 700 fake credit and gift cards that were found in their motel rooms and cars, authorities said. Full story.

With tree dispute settled, family moves into Barrington Hills dream home

A couple who waited three years for their 9,200-square-foot dream home in Barrington Hills finally spent their first night in it after their attorneys and village officials struck a deal allowing them to move in while a dispute over the type and size of trees on the property is resolved. Former DuPage County Chairman Bob Schillerstrom is being mentioned as a likely replacement for Illinois tollway board Chairwoman Paula Wolff, who stepped down earlier this week. Waukegan man denies threatening relative over 6 days, killing 3 dogs

A Waukegan man has pleaded not guilty to accusations he used weapons — including a sledgehammer — to kill three dogs and threatened to kill a family member with a machete. Juan Rositas is charged with armed violence for threatening to “chop up” the family member with the machete while she pleaded for her life during a confrontation from April 5 to April 10. Durbin backs Duckworth for Senate

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says he'll back U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth in her Democratic primary bid to challenge U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in 2016. “The incumbent in this race is already running television ads — 18 months before the election!” Durbin wrote in an email to supporters. “Tammy needs our help to catch up.” Kirk's campaign was critical of the endorsement.
