Police: North Aurora man attacked former girlfriend in her apartment

A 23-year-old man is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's North Aurora apartment Thursday morning and attacking her and her new boyfriend, damaging a table and TV and stealing a PlayStation3, police said.

Irvin Bernal, of the 1000 block of Spruce Lane, Aurora, was being held on $100,000 bail and faces a minimum of six years in prison if convicted of home invasion.

According to police, Bernal kicked in a window screen at the 21-year-old woman's apartment on the 200 block of Butterfield Road at about 2:45 a.m. and attacked the woman and her 22-year-old male companion.

Bernal took the game console and ran before being arrested near Lilac Lane and Butterfield Road, police said.

Both people had minor injuries but refused treatment, police said.

In addition to felony home invasion, Bernal also has been charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor domestic battery, according to police and court records.

Bernal must post $10,000 to be released from the Kane County jail while his case is pending.

He is next due in court Wednesday.

Bernal's only previous arrest in Kane County was on charges of underage drinking and marijuana possession in May 2010 in Aurora, records show.
