Des Plaines Community Foundation gives new award

The winner of the first Sadie Rose Argus Leadership Award will be announced Friday during an awards ceremony at Maine West High School.

The Des Plaines Community Foundation's newest scholarship, intended for junior and senior high school students to help pay for their postsecondary education, will be given to those who have volunteered their time to carrying out the mission, programs and services of the foundation, according to a news release.

The award was named in recognition of Argus, who helped homeowners pack and clean, shoveled snow for seniors and the disabled, solicited and picked up donations, and recruited other youth volunteers. She received $1,000 last year to help pay for books; awardees may receive up to $2,000, as chosen by the foundation board.
