Illinois House returns for vote on workers' compensation

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Lawmakers returning to Springfield for their first day of an overtime legislative session are set to consider a new workers' compensation proposal from Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Legislators left town Sunday after passing a $36.3 billion budget that's more than $3 billion short of revenues. They're returning amid an impasse between Democrats and Gov. Bruce Rauner, who says he won't sign an unbalanced budget.

The Republican governor wants legislation approved on his pro-business priorities that includes lowering employer cost of workers compensation. But Rauner spokesman Lance Trover says Madigan's proposal is a "phony reform."

Rauner has already announced $400 million in cuts to facilities and social services if a budget agreement can't be reached by July 1.

Lawmaker expenses won't be reimbursed this summer. The Senate reconvenes June 9.
