Final Concert for Westgate's Fifth Graders
"Synergy in Action" was the theme for the fifth grade music concert at Westgate Elementary in Arlington Heights. Seven songs centered on leadership were performed by 5th grade students under the direction of music teachers Jerry Berger and Nancy Henjum.
The stage background, an artistic hand/arm backdrop created by the fifth graders under the guidance of Westgate's art teacher Brenda Miller, helped set the tone for the evening. In the spirit of the "Leader in Me" theme, the beautiful backdrop represented collaborative team effort but at the same time seemed to wave goodbye to these students as they move on to South Middle School.
The concert opened with "Seize the Day" which featured a group of ten students who had auditioned to sing the opening solo. The next song, "Rock Boom BAG," featured students on soprano recorder, along with Mr. Solarz' class on boomwhacker tubes. The next three songs were sung by either two or three of the five classes.
All the students came back together to sing the very moving song "All We're Meant to Be." It touched the hearts of many parents as it represented their child growing up and moving on to the next stage of their lives. The evening ended with the upbeat song "Teamwork" which symbolized the leadership and synergy that fifth graders now demonstrated as they wrapped up their final concert at Westgate Elementary!
