Elgin man gets 4½ years in prison for hitting cabdriver in face with gun

An Elgin man has been sentenced to 4½ years in prison for the attempted robbery of a cabdriver in April 2014.

Jeremy M. Jones, 21, of the 300 block of Washington Street, pleaded guilty last week to the reduced charge of attempted armed robbery with a firearm and must pay a $600 fine.

Jones and a 17-year-old juvenile were arrested in April 2014 and charged with attacking a cabdriver on the corner of Crystal and Mountain streets in Elgin.

According to court documents, Jones, armed with a handgun, demanded money from the cabdriver and hit the driver in the face with the gun after the driver did not immediately turn over money.

The cabdriver, who suffered minor injuries, was able to drive away and call police before any money was taken, authorities said.

The 17-year-old was charged as a juvenile and the outcome of his case was not available.

In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed the most severe charge of armed robbery, which carried a minimum prison term of 15 years.

Judge John Barsanti accepted the guilty plea, records show.

Jones receives credit for nearly 14 months served at the Kane County jail while the case was pending.
