Monthly summer tours of Ragdale Artists' Retreat begin June 6

Submitted by Ragdale Media Relations

Ragdale, the nationally acclaimed artists' retreat, offers monthly, docent-led tours from June through September for individuals and groups. Located on the former country estate of arts and crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, a Ragdale tour includes: the historic Ragdale House, visual artist studios, exquisite gardens, an introduction to the Shaw family history and the artists' residency program that serves over 150 artists and authors each year.

Public tours will be held at 10 a.m. Saturdays, June 6, July 18, Aug. 22 and Sept. 19.

Group tours for 10 or more are scheduled monthly from May through October and must be arranged in advance, preferably at 2 p.m. on Fridays. The only tour date still available is Friday, Oct. 23.

Ragdale is at 1230 N. Green Bay Road, Lake Forest. Meet on the front porch of the Ragdale House for the tours. Limited parking is available in the lot.

These tours are rare opportunities to see behind-the-scenes at an artists' residency, typically closed to the public. Visitors can experience the 5-acre site which includes two historic homes, several artist studios, gardens and vistas of 50 acres of virgin prairie. The Ragdale House, originally built in 1897, and the Barn House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Admission is $10 per person. Advance reservations are recommended for individuals and required for groups of 10 or more. For reservations, visit www.ragdale.org, call (847) 234-1063 or email: info@ragdale.org

Ragdale is a nonprofit artists' community created in 1976 by Howard Van Doren Shaw's granddaughter, Alice Judson Hayes, to provide time and space for professional artists to create important new work. Ragdale offers a retreat setting where, at any given time, 13 artists-in-residence experience uninterrupted time for dedicated work, a supportive environment, dynamic artist exchanges, 50 acres of idyllic prairie, and a family-style dinner each evening.
