Problem-oriented policing conference scheduled in Naperville

Police from seven suburban departments and Houston, Texas, will speak at the inaugural Illinois Problem-Oriented Policing Conference Wednesday and Thursday, May 27-28, at the Chicago Marriott Naperville, 1801 N. Naper Blvd.

Gun violence, heroin abuse and shutting problem properties are among topics to be explored.

Three general sessions, 15 breakout sessions and a panel discussion are planned.

Scheduled to speak are law-enforcement officers from departments in Aurora, Naperville, Joliet, Skokie, Peoria, Urbana, Houston, Texas, and Benedictine University in Lisle.

Brandon Kooi, criminal justice associate professor at Aurora University, is organizing the conference and will lead a breakout session.

"Problem-oriented policing places a high value on new responses that are preventive in nature, engages other public agencies, the community and the private sector when their involvement contributes to the reduction of a problem," he said.

General sessions include:

• "Chronic Consumer Stabilization Initiative: A Multi-Agency Collaboration (policing mentally ill), Houston Police Department.

Breakout sessions include:

• "Heroin: Problematic Analysis with Popular Response," Naperville Police Department.

• "Shutting Down Chronic Problem Properties," Peoria Police Department.

• "Crime Analysis for Problem Solvers," Brandon Kooi, Aurora University.

• "Managing Pitfalls when Coordinating POP," Rockford Police Department.

• "Finding Typhoid Mary: Ganging up on Gun Violence," Aurora Police Department.

• "Building Partnerships while Reducing Campus Burglaries and Alcohol Disorder," Benedictine University Police Department.

• "Shifting & Sharing Responsibility for Public Safety Problems," Mike Scott, director, Center for Problem-Oriented Policing.

• "The Downtown Alcohol Project," Joliet Police Department.

• "Impact of Body Cameras on Police Community Relations," panel discussion.

• "Problem-Solving for Large-Scale Celebratory Events: The Madness of March," Urbana Police Department.

• "Pulling Levers to Counter Open Drug Markets: Targeted Deterrence," Rockford Police Department.

• "Empowering Parents & Students Not to be Victims in Social Media," Naperville Police Department.
