Recycle your electronics May 16 in Elgin

State Rep. Anna Moeller, a Democrat from Elgin, will co-host a free Electronics Recycling Day with United Cerebral Palsy Seguin from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16, in the parking lot of Elgin city hall, 150 Dexter Court.

"As an increasing number of people use electronic devices, there is a growing need to be able to dispose of these items in a safe and environmentally friendly way," Moeller said. "Many electronics contain harmful chemicals, such as mercury, and they should not simply be tossed in the trash."

Moeller's event will give residents the opportunity to recycle computers and electronics in an environmentally sound manner, and help UCP Seguin provide jobs for people with disabilities and other special needs.

Items accepted free include: computers, scanners, printers; typewriters, ink cartridges, fax machines, keyboards, iPods, video game systems, audio/visual equipment, cellphones, tablets, universal power supplies and cables.

Those not accepted include: TVs; any liquids or powders; air conditioners; dehumidifiers; refrigerators; batteries; and fluorescent lamps or bulbs.

All hard drives will either be sanitized or destroyed.

"This is a unique event that will benefit consumers, people with disabilities, and the environment," Moeller said. "It is important to the health of our community to offer residents a convenient and free way to get rid of potentially toxic material, and I will continue to look for ways to bring resources like this directly to residents of the Elgin area."
