ECC offers new advanced medical imaging certificate

Starting this fall, Elgin Community College will offer an advanced medical imaging certificate in computed tomography.

The CT advanced certificate is a two semester, limited enrollment program, which includes online instruction and 560 contact hours of clinical experience.

Based on the national CT curriculum established by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), it includes all didactic and clinical competencies required for eligibility for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) advanced national certification examination in CT.

"Most working professionals cannot quit their jobs to continue their education and advance their careers," said Deb Letizio, director of medical imaging. "Our programs offer the flexibility which allows them to meet their educational and career goals while maintaining their employment and income. These programs also meet the needs of our radiography graduates who wish to become multi-credentialed."

CT technologists are in high demand. These professionals produce cross-sectional images of internal organs and tissues, which help to more accurately diagnose a patient's medical condition. CT technologists also administer contrast materials, prepare and operate CT scanning equipment, and correctly position the patient for successful imaging.

Upon completion of the advanced CT certificate at ECC, students are eligible to take the ARRT's certifying examination.

The college also offers medical imaging certificates in magnetic resonance imaging and mammography.
