Celebrate Summer Reading with Kick-Off Event at Library
All ages are invited to celebrate the kick-off of "Read to the Rhythm" on Monday, June 1, at the Schaumburg Township District Library's central location in Schaumburg, as well as the branches in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park. "Read to the Rhythm" is STDL's summer reading/watching/doing program for all ages. Participants sign up to engage in a combination of reading and other experiences, including watching movies, listening to audio books and attending concerts, programs or bus trips, then receive a prize after completing the activities. Adults, teens and children may sign up at any of the library locations or online at www.schaumburglibrary.org beginning June 1. The program ends Saturday, Aug. 15.
Throughout the June 1 kick-off celebration, there will be a variety of musical activities, including musical instrument demonstrations, concerts, and children's programs. No fee or registration is required for the following June 1 programs and activities.
Children ages 4 and up will enjoy "The Knightly News Opera" from 9:30-10 a.m. or 10:30-11 a.m. in the Rasmussen Room of the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg. Green Light Vocal Productions will present a delightful show with Prince Charming, Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf and other beloved characters. The catchy melodies will introduce children to the concept of opera as a singing story in a fun-filled way. Limited tickets will be available in the kidsZone 20 minutes prior to showtime. Children and caregivers may attend only one show.
The "Rhythm and Rhymes" concert will be held for children ages 2 and up from 12:30-1:15 p.m. at the Hanover Park Branch, 1266 Irving Park Rd. The same concert will be repeated from 3-3:45 p.m. at the Hoffman Estates Branch, 1550 Hassell Rd. Award-winning children's musician Laura Doherty will present an energetic concert featuring songs from her three albums. Children will learn about rhythm, vibration and pitch through songs and puppets.
Musicians from the Metropolitan Performing Arts Center will demonstrate a variety of instruments from 4-6 p.m. in the Central Library lobby. Library visitors are invited to learn a little bit about the instruments, hear them demonstrated and try their hands at playing them.
The June 1 Read to the Rhythm celebration will culminate with the Second Time Around concert from 6:45-8:15 p.m. in Schaumburg's Town Square, corner of Schaumburg and Roselle roads. These nine talented musicians will kick off the library's summer concert series with classic rock and blues hits by Deep Purple, the James Gang, Yes, the Eagles and more. Food trucks from Chicago Pizza Boss and GiaVia Sweets will have snacks available to purchase. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held Thursday, June 4.
Registration for the "Read to the Rhythm" reading/watching/doing summer program begins June 1 at all of the STDL locations and online at www.schaumburglibrary.org.
