Elgin to host Police Memorial Service

In honor of National Police Week, the community is invited to attend the Elgin Police Department's Police Memorial Service from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Elgin Police Department, 151 Douglas Ave.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, they will dedicate the new commemorative bricks with a ribbon-cutting.

Stop by the Elgin police historical displays afterward in the lobby, where refreshments will be served.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as "Police Week." National Police Week recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement, and pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Elgin Police Department commemorates Police Week by holding this special observation, including presentation of the colors and national anthem, reading of proclamation, laying of a wreath, and lowering the colors.
