Wedl's 1-hitter lifts Wauconda past Antioch

Kayla Wedl struck out 15 batters, and Wauconda's softball team avenged its earlier-season loss to Antioch with a 1-0 win Wednesday in a North Suburban Prairie Division showdown.

Wedl allowed only 1 hit, a sixth-inning single, as visiting Wauconda improved to 17-10 and 7-1 in the NSC Prairie. The Bulldogs scored the game's only run in the third when Brooke Sefcik singled in Hayley Redmann. Wauconda had only 3 hits in the game.

Carmel 10, Benet 4: Emma Bartz belted a grand slam, singled and knocked in 5 runs for the visiting Corsairs in East Suburban Catholic action.

Carmel also got 2 hits apiece from Claire Petrus (2 runs) and Dani DeLozier (2 runs, RBI). Petrus struck out eight and allowed 3 earned runs in earning the win.

Libertyville 8, Mundelein 6: Sarah Hoyer went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, as the Wildcats cooled off the Mustangs in a North Suburban Lake battle.

Kenzie Rother was 2-for-3 and Jessie Lauret (double) went 2-for-4 for Libertyville. Winning pitcher Hannah Heraty (14-6) struck out seven, allowed 7 hits and did not walk a batter.

Karlee Busscher homered for Mundelein (21-5), which also got a 2-for-3 effort from Maria DeVito. DeVito and Maddie Zazas doubled.

Grayslake North 4, Hampshire 1: Cassie Cowperthwaite had a double and an RBI for the visiting Knights in their Fox Valley Fox win.

Danielle Runyon went the distance in the circle for Grayslake North. The junior did not allow an earned run or walk, struck out four and scattered 5 hits.

Vernon Hills 13, Niles West 5: Dana Meline was 4-for-4 and scored 5 runs for the Cougars in their nonconference win.

Sara Lenzi (2 RBI) and Sami Saliba each went 3-for-5 for Vernon Hills. Saliba doubled and drove in 4 runs. Rose Ferolo also doubled and knocked in a pair of runs for the Cougars.

Lake Zurich 15, Grant 4: Jessica Puccinelli was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, a triple and 5 RBI, as the host Bears cruised in the North Suburban crossover.

The Bears also got big offensive games from Amanda Guercio (2-for-2, RBI), Melissa Goldberg (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI) and McKenna Zobel (2-for-3, 2 RBI). Katie Malek pitched all 5 innings for the win.

McKenzie Sancken had a double for Grant.
