Boy Scout service projects aid Lake County veterans

Boy Scout Troop 672 has a new standing service mission to help Lake County veterans. The troop is chartered by the Wildwood Presbyterian Church.

The Joey Dimock Memorial was created to support a mission to honor, remember and celebrate the life of one of the Troop's Eagle Scouts, U.S. Army Ranger Spc. Joey Dimock. Joey grew up in Wildwood, attended Warren Township High School, and enlisted in the Army right out of high school.

He trained at Fort Benning Georgia and was later stationed at Hunter Army Air Field. Deployed three times, Joey lost his life on July 10, 2010, in Salerno, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Troop's mission is to assist Lake County veterans in need of small scale services at their place of residence. They work with the Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County to identify veterans in need of help. To date, they have completed several projects such as planting a garden and rebuilding a path to support a veteran in a wheelchair.

Their most recent projects provided a week's worth of groceries to several families in need just in time for the Christmas and Easter holidays. The Scouts were given a budget and list of suggested grocery items and headed to the Round Lake Aldi in December and the Waukegan Aldi in March to do their shopping.

Not only were the boys learning to shop on a budget, but also provided the opportunity to help make someone's holiday a little easier.

Showing up at the veteran's homes in several different towns with a carload of food really made the veterans feel the troop's support for all they have done for the country.

The funding for their various projects is provided through an annual Joey Dimock Memorial Golf Outing, which is scheduled for June 19 at Bittersweet Golf Course in Gurnee. Anyone interested in supporting the mission can visit joeydimockmemorial.org to see how to help or to attend the outing.
