Garage catches fire in Round Lake Park

A fire in Round Lake Park Monday afternoon gutted a garage and caused smoke and heat damage to the attached house, fire officials said.

The fire broke out just before 3:30 p.m. in the garage of a two-story, single-family home on the 100 block of West Abbey Lane, said Bill Rohrs, a captain with the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.

A passer-by called the blaze in, Rohrs said, and the homeowner quickly arrived to remove a dog and a large pet bird from the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Nobody was injured. Rohrs estimated the damage at $40,000.
