Des Plaines History Center to examine WWII biography

Copies of the World War II biography "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand are now available at the readers services desk at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood St.

This story will be discussed at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. Adults and high school students are welcome.

"Unbroken," a best-seller that is now a major motion picture, tells the story of Louis Zamperini as an Olympic runner, American airman and prisoner of war in World War II. The book "is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by 'Seabiscuit' author Laura Hillenbrand," says one reviewer.

The History Center selected this book because 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and has been hosting various war-related programs all year long. One of its main attractions is the exhibit "World War II: Des Plaines and the War against fascism," which will remain on display through December. The public is invited to view the show from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays at no cost.

In addition, the community is invited to the Coffee Talk, "The Germans and their Fuehrer: Insights into a Mutual Obsession," presented by German historian Anette Isaacs from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Frisbie Senior Center, 52 E. Northwest Hwy. A $3 donation is suggested.

The other World War II books that the History Center book group will review this year are "Code Talker" by Chester Nez (July 15) and "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut (Sept. 16).
