214@100: She's beaten cancer, but for Sayre the fight continues

Two-time breast cancer survivor and Elk Grove High School teacher Rita Sayre is a source of pride and courage for staff, students and the community. Last year, she was among the women who shaved her head for the St. Baldrick's fundraiser to support a friend and fellow English teacher undergoing chemotherapy. For the past 10 years, she has also been an advocate and fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, which recognized her efforts with an Outstanding Volunteer award.

In charge of the Elk Grove Relay For Life, Sayre sponsors her own student team and encourages donations all year long. She also hosts an annual charity staff luncheon. "I love to help people who are in the same situation as I was," Sayre said.
