Elgin Development Group offers tips on exporting, selling online

The Elgin Development Group will offer a seminar on exporting, "Exporting - Selling Online - The Secret to it All!

There are almost 3 billion Internet users worldwide and over 40 percent of them purchased something online in the last year. That translates into nearly $1.5 trillion in sales. Every business should have a strategy in place to access these customers and the Elgin Development Group is offering a free exporting seminar to access those online users.

The Elgin Development Group, a division of the Elgin Area Chamber, in conjunction with the Illinois Small Business Development Center, has planned a free afternoon seminar from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Building E, and Room 107.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for local businesses to learn how to use the newest tools and technology such as eBay, Alibaba and other e-commerce options to find new customers and build your international brand recognition," said Carol Gieske, Elgin Area Chamber president and CEO.

Zachary Person, Illinois International Trade Center Program Manager at College of DuPage's Center for Entrepreneurship, will offer tips and tricks for increasing your export business margins, finding grant funded trade missions and the secret that brings it all together.

"Over 200 Elgin businesses currently export and more are thinking about exporting to increase their businesses," said Tony Lucenko, Elgin Development Group Director. "Everyone can take away helpful strategies that will help their business expand. This seminar is especially helpful to businesses that are thinking about exporting. It gives them an opportunity to learn how to sell online along with insight into the process of exporting."

Key learning objectives will include:

• Learning how to use new and existing e-commerce platforms to find and sell to new customers in international markets;

• Things to think about before launching an international e-commerce strategy;

• Tax incentives for exporting;

• Free and low cost export development programs;

• Strategies for overcoming payment and shipping risks.
