Cougars sweep Kernels 6-1. 2-1 in double header

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars swept a doubleheader from the Cedar Rapids Kernels by scores of 6-1 and 2-1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

After their opening victory, the Cougars (7-10) didn't score until the fourth inning of the second contest. With two outs Marty Herum took advantage of a walk to Grant Heyman and a hit by pitch to Steve McQuail by doubling home both runners.

Jared Miller (2-1) kept the Kernels scoreless until the sixth when he gave up a one-out double to Nick Gordon and was pulled for right-hander Nick Baker. A wild pitch allowed Gordon to score, cutting the lead 2-1. After Trey Vavra's double, Zac Curtis came on in relief and ended the inning with a strikeout, then worked a perfect seventh for his second save.

Felix Jorge (1-1) suffered the loss despite a quality start of 6 innings and 2 runs.

In Game 1, clutch offense and solid pitching by Brent Jones (1-2) were the key.

With the game tied at 1-1. the Cougars got 3 runs in the fourth as Cody Regis scored on Jose Queliz's RBI groundout, Victor Reyes tripled home Fernery Ozuna and Colin Bray delivered an RBI single.

Two innings later, the Cougars' Stryker Trahan and Regis walked and score on Ozuna's triple for 6-1 lead.

Jones picked up his first win with 6 innings of 1-run baseball. Mason McCullough tossed a scoreless seventh to seal the victory.
