Palatine Library Celebrates Polish Culture in May

The Palatine Library will celebrate Polish Culture in May with programs for everyone to enjoy-from the children' storytime and craft in Polish and English-to the Song and Dance Ensemble, Lajkonik. Come experience a little culture and history of Poland at the Library.

On Friday, May 1, bring the little ones to hear a story in Polish and English. Afterward, the children will complete a simple craft to take home. This special program from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m., is for preschoolers through second graders.

Adults will enjoy learning the craft of Polish paper cutting (Wycinanki), and create artistic designs from colorful paper. This Crafternoon class is on Saturday, May 2; from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Supplies for this program are generously provided by the Friends of the Palatine Library.

On Thursday, May 7, Steve Szabados discusses how to research your Polish ancestors. From 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., he shares his methods and tips to help you succeed in your genealogy quest.

On Monday, May 11, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m., Polish Song and Dance Ensemble, Lajkonik shares Polish traditions and history through festive songs and dances, highlighting the different regions of Poland. A presenter describes what is taking place and shares the culture of Poland. Lajkonik was founded in 1991 to foster Polish culture and traditions in the United States, and is a member of the Polish National Alliance and the Polish Folk Dance Association of America.

Enjoy a book discussion about the Poetry of Nobel Prize Winner Wislawa Szymborska from the Great Books Foundation on Tuesday, May 19 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Selections include: Could Have, The End and the Beginning, Utopia, and The Three Oddest Words. Copies of the book are available for $5.00 at the second floor Reference Desk.

Finally, Bogna Solak, owner of Oak Mill Bakery, treats you to a taste of Europe from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, as she presents delicious recipes of pastries and desserts from Poland. Valid District cardholders only. Samples provided.
